Central School Windows

The historic two-storey, red brick Central Elementary School, was built in 1913. This building is still one of the most impressive school buildings in Kelowna and has significant heritage value.

In August 2013, Greyback Construction completed the restoration of 95 wood windows at the Historic Central School.

The windows were original to the building, about 100 years old, and were dismantled by Greyback and sent to Vintage Woodworks in Victoria, BC to be restored and refurbished.

While this restoration of the window sashes was taking place in Victoria, Greyback restored the existing wood frames and sills and prepared them for the re-installation. This work included stripping down of hazardous lead paint, and involved specialty trades, equipment and procedures specifically brought in for this phase.

Most of the existing window hardware was re-used which had to be cleaned and repaired so all parts were functioning properly. Where required, new hardware was cast from molds to match the existing.

Part of the Heritage Alteration Permit required that every single window was reinstalled in its exact original location, which involved thorough organization and documentation when shipping the items back and forth to Victoria. Finally, the restored windows and frames received a fresh coat of paint to match the original 1913 style.
