Chute Lake Elementary School

This was a new two storey elementary school consisting of approximately 3090 m² of floor area. Site work involved all civil services, concrete sidewalks, asphalt paths and parking area, complete with irrigation systems and soft landscaping including playing fields; slab on grade, wood frame and heavy timber members for the two storey class portion.

The project was LEED built, achieving the Green Building of the Year Award 2009 from OMREB – Commercial Division.

Our biggest goal was to get the students back to class for September, which we achieved.

Greyback proactively met challenges with innovation and creativity.

For example, during a long and unusually cold winter, building a structure of wood frame, concrete block and structural
steel proved particularly difficult. Rather than the typical process of framing the walls in place once the block was completed, we pre-fabbed the primary wood walls on-site and craned them into place. This cost Greyback more than the usual method however it put us right back on schedule and proved invaluable to the project’s ultimate success.
